Last Chance: Join the Great East End Clean-Up

Registration deadline extended.

Southampton Town is giving residents more time to sign up to be part of the Great East End Clean-Up on April 20 and 21, a volunteer program to remove litter and debris from public beaches, parks, roads and trails.

Online registration, which was originally scheduled to end this coming Monday, has been extended to April 19.

In 2012, 900 volunteers collected 46 tons of litter in two days, according to the town.

The town provides garbage bags, sticks and waste transfer station passes, all of which can be picked up April 15 at the Hampton Bays Community Center, or by April 19 at the North Sea Transfer Station office or the Citizens' Response Center in Town Hall.

Garbage collected during the cleanup may be dropped off at any of the town's four transfer stations for free, as long as volunteers register in advance. Register at southamptontownny.gov.

The town asks volunteers to put all the plastic shopping bags they collect in a bag seperate from the other litter, to help collect data for the town campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags and encourage recycling.
