How to Dispose of Your Christmas Tree in Westhampton-Hampton Bays

Here is what Southampton Town residents west of the Shinnecock Canal need to know to dispose of their trees with ease.

Jan. 6 marks the Epiphany, the traditional day to take down the Christmas tree, and for those who get a real tree each year, the day also poses the challenge of how to dispose of it.

Because the Town of Southampton does not offer municipal waste pick up, town residents are responsible for bringing their trees to one of three transfer stations, located in Westhampton, Hampton Bays and North Sea , through the end of January. The Sag Harbor waste transfer facility is not accepting trees.

Residents may dispose of trees, pine garland and wreaths at no cost, but there is a limit of three trees per resident. Stands and lights must be removed from the trees or they will not be accepted.

Landscapers and commercial haulers must pay their typical truckload fees to drop off the trees.

The trees will be put through a wood chipper then composted or mulched. Residents may then pick up mulch for free for their landscaping and gardening needs, on a first-come, first-served basis at the North Sea, Hampton Bays and Westhampton facilities.

Those living in the Village of Westhampton Beach can simply place their trees outside their homes and they will be picked up by the village. However, they can not be bagged. Village residents can also opt to bring them to one of Southampton's transfer stations.

In the Village of Quogue, trees can be left at the street and the village highway department will collect them.
