After seeing an expensive, wooden sign stating "Welcome to Hampton Bays" obstructed from view by advertisements, the Hampton Bays Beautification Association plans to ask other organizations to find better spots for banners, von Freddi said.

Currently, many events place their advertisements immediately in front of the landscaped sign near the Hampton Bays Diner. Von Freddi hopes the organizations will place displays on the side of the sign.

TRAIL DEDICATION DATE SET

The finishing touches on the Vince Cannuscio trail, behind Squiretown on Main Street, will be made over the next month in preparation for the dedication ceremony on October 7. The association authorized an expenditure of $2,500 on plants to beautify the trail.

BOOK KEEPING

The association, charged with maintaining some of the gardens in Hampton Bays, also made a donation of $100 to the Hampton Bays Historical Society for its $50,000 project to put a new roof on the .

Von Freddi said that the company’s balance sheet was in the red for the month of August, only because of the expense of paying for the band at the “Under the Stars” concert. The association received income of $3,075 but had expenses of $7,174. Von Freddi said that by the end of August not all the deposits from the concert had been made, and that the organization is solidly in the black.

The Hampton Bays Beautification Association earned a profit of $7,064 in the concert, said Jack O’Keefe, who helped put it on. Approximately 2,700 attended the event.

BENCH UPKEEP

The association also charged O’Keefe with completing an inventory of all the association’s benches scattered throughout the hamlet. Some of the benches may have been washed away during Tropical Storm Irene, while others may have been moved by flood waters.

The association does not own the benches, von Freddi said. The individuals who buy the benches maintain them, while the association acts as a steward.

Next Meeting

The Hampton Bays Beautification Association will be holding a general membership meeting on October 3,  at the Hampton Bays Library at 7 p.m.  Guest Speaker will be Alex Gregor, Southampton highway superintendent.
