First Annual Ponquogue Bridge 5K Run/Walk Touted as a Success

On Saturday morning more than 400 people participated in the new Lions Club event.

More than 400 people participated in the Hampton Bays Lions Club "Over the Bridge" 5K/10K run on Saturday morning on the Ponquogue Bridge to benefit Lions Club programs.

Participants arrived early at Hampton Bays Middle School to be bused to the starting point, Warner's Park on Dune Road. 

With Island Timing starting the race, everyone got moving up and over the bridge.

"It was a challenge to the participants to cross over the elevation of the Ponquogue Bridge," said Frank Butz, chairman of the run.

Butz said he was pleased with the turnout.

"Because of the beauty of the course and the challenge crossing the bridge we expect that it will grow in years to come," said Butz.  "We also welcome more community participation and involvement to encourage the participants along the route.

This year's race winners are as follows:

First place finishers for the 5K Run:
Male - Lee Sosser @ 19:33
Female - Sharon Zuhoski @ 24:57
 
First place finishers for the 10K Run:
Male - Angel Rojas @ 38:38
Female - Kelly Olphie @ 42:33
