Event Preview: Long Island Sound Chorus Performance for Armed Forces

The chorus will sing on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hampton Bays High School.

The Long Island Chorus of Sweet Adelines, International will perform its annual show in the honor of the more than 30,000 troops still overseas on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hampton Bays High School.

The tribute, called, Let Freedom Sing, will also feature the United States Coast Guard Academy Idlers.

The Long Island Chorus was started 50 years ago on the East End of Long Island and, according to Thea DiSunno, membership coordinator for the chorus, features 38 singers of all ages from the East End and as far west as Hauppauge.

"It keeps you young," said DiSunno of singing in the chorus. "Our oldest member is 88 and our youngest in their 30s."

Some of the members have trained voices, while others started out just by being able to carry a tune and through the training the organization provides have become accomplished singers.

"I started singing with the group thirty-five years ago. I had no voice, but now I have a voice because of all the training," said DiSunno.

The group meets every week in Riverhead to hone its skills and ready itself for competitions, holiday performances and its annual show.

During this year's two-hour performance, the group will be singing a number of patriotic songs, and others showing pride in New York.

"Because our show is shortly after 9/11, we wanted to show how we feel as a group," said DiSunno.

Tickets are $15 and proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. For more information and ticket sales, call 267-6441.
