Can You Identify This Historical Photo?

Local historians dig into their archives.

Each week, we will feature a local historical photo from the archives of either Sally Spanburgh, a Southampton preservation advocate, or the Hampton Bays Historical Society and ask readers to guess what is pictured, the date the photo was taken and/or what is there today.

If you think you know the answer, let us know in the comment section below. We will let you know if you're right next Sunday when we post the next photo challenge.

Last week's photo, according to Brenda Berntson, of the Hampton Bays Historical Society was of Jim's Beach, currently Meschutt Beach on the peconic bay. The photo is dated 1946.

I believe this is a view of Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays....looking east..If you were standing in the middle of the road, the current movie theater would be on the right and the building on the left houses a nail salon and two tiny stores.

I agree with Stacey. You see Lyzon Hat Shop on the left, next to the Maison de Blanc building. Dr Raff's dental office is across the street next to Shinnecock Hardware and Mrs. Decker's Milinery Shop is down from Lyzon's and what is now the Prosper King House.

Oops! Mrs. Decker had a dress shop, not a millinery!

I agree with Stacey and Lydene, Montauk Hwy. in Hampton Bays looking east. This is across from the movie, and I believe it was once Manny's clothing store for women.

This is a photo of Walter King's hat shop Mr. King was internationaly known for his hat design. Later this became "Manny's" which I beleive was an apperal shop. This photo appears to be in the 40's , long before shinnecock hardware (prior to that it was Phillips Hardware) and the dential office of Morris Raff.
