Beach Clean-up and Seal Release Slated for Saturday

Zazu will be sent home at 11:30 with a beach clean-up to follow at noon.

On Saturday morning, the Riverhead Foundation will send off Zazu, a seal pup that the Foundation nursed back to health.

Zazu, according to the Foundation, was found on March 15 by a beach-goer near Scott Cameron Beach in Watermill.

Zazu, a 44 pound male gray seal pup was lethargic and had a laceration on his head.

The Foundation said that he responded well to rehabilitation and after three weeks, he began to eat herring by himself โ€” he is currently eating eight pounds of fish per day.

Zazu also loves to play, said the Foundation โ€” he plays with balls, lids from pails, and foam mats.

Zazu will be released on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Dune Road Boat Ramp in Hampton Bays. The public is invited.

Following Zazu's release, the Foundation asks everyone to help clean on Ponquogue Beach in Hampton Bays as part of the 2013 International Beach Clean-Up Initiative.

The clean-up will start at noon at the beach.
