Animal Shelter Offers Black Friday, Black Cat Deal

The is hosting a Black Friday, Black Cat event Friday through Sunday.

All black cats 1-year-old and younger are $20, and adoption fees are being waived for all black cats over a year old, according to shelter director Donald Bambrick.

Normally, adoption fees are $60 for kittens, $50 for adults and $40 for senior cats, older than 7 years.

Cathy Duemler, the outreach coordinator for the shelter, said that because people have superstitions about black cats, fewer of them are adopted. "More black cats are euthanized in this country because of those superstitions."

Duemler noted that Southampton Animal Shelter does not euthanize any adoptable animal. "We would just like to find some of these cats a loving home," she said."Some of these cats have been here for four or five years."

Of the 140 to 150 cats currently residing at the shelter, more than 20 of them are black, Duemler said. "We had an excess of black kittens this year," she added.

Adoption hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
