500 Take the Pledge To Recycle and Reuse

All those who took the pledge got a free tote bag.

For the second summer in a row, the Town of Southampton gave away reusable, canvas tote bags to residents willing to pledge to reduce, reuse, and recycle when it comes to plastic bags.

On Saturday, some 200 residents took that pledge at while enjoying the sun at Sagg Main, Pikes and Ponquogue Beaches.

The bag give-away was part of the town's  “Greener Southampton: the Solution is in the Bag” campaign, which has a goal to  increase the recycling rate of plastic bags in Southampton.

“There was great feedback and people were very enthusiastic about joining in the effort,” said Councilman Chris Nuzzi, who is a liaison to the task force along with Councilwoman Christine Scalera.  “We had a lot of people approach the table just to tell us that they signed up for our program in the past, and that they’ve since switched from plastic to reusable bags.”
