Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will host a World Water Day celebration Saturday at Smith Point Park. Girl Scouts will be able to earn a Love Green patch by helping clean up the beach, test water quality and listening to a presentation by County Executive Bellone, Stony Brook scientist Chris Gobler and the Suffolk County Department of Health.
Bellone has identified water quality as the biggest issue facing the county, saying, “Nitrogen poisoning of our surface and groundwater’s is the greatest crisis this county has faced in generations. The water that feeds our wetlands and marshlands protect us from storms like Superstorm Sandy. The advance levels of nitrogen pollution being inflicted on Suffolk County’s ground and surface waters threatens the future of Suffolk County.”
The event, from 1-3 p.m., is open to all youngsters.
