Sheriff Demarco Urges Residents to Begin Preparing

SHERIFF DEMARCO URGES RESIDENTS TO BEGIN PREPARING
THIS WEEKEND FOR POTENTIAL STORM

Riverhead, NY– Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today encouraged families and individuals to prepare for a large potential storm heading toward the northeast.

“I encourage everyone to plan a hurricane route, prepare an emergency kit, and stay informed of the weather forecast,” stated DeMarco. “Information about how to prepare for a hurricane or tropical storm is posted on the Sheriff’s Office website at www.suffolksheriff.com, and real time traffic alerts are also available,” he added.

Regardless of how the storm eventually tracks, DeMarco cautioned residents to start preparing now to mitigate the impact in the event that Hurricane Sandy does make landfall early next week near the New York metropolitan area.

Here are some basic tips on what you can do this weekend to prepare for a potential storm. Additional information and important links are posted on the Sheriff’s Office website under the Public Information menu:

SECURE YOUR HOME

Loose, lightweight objects, such as lawn furniture and garbage cans should be brought inside.  Anchor objects that will be unsafe to bring inside, such as gas grills or propane tanks.

If your basement is vulnerable to flooding, move any valuable items to upper floors.

STOCK UP ON NON-PERISHABLE FOOD AND WATER

Make sure you have a supply of the following:

One gallon of water per person, per day

Ready to eat food and a manual can opener

FILL PRESCRIPTIONS FOR IMPORTANT MEDICATIONS

Have a supply of important medications; don't wait for the last minute to fill prescriptions.

ASSEMBLE AN EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT

Make sure you have a supply of the following:

A first-aid kit, some flashlights and extra batteries, and a battery operated radio

CHARGE ALL CELL PHONES

HELP OTHERS PREPARE

Check on friends, relatives, and neighbors, especially older adults and people with disabilities or health conditions, and assist them with their preparation

P. Killian, Thanks for asking. We just reached out to State police. They are doing seatbelt checks.
