Boy Scouts Brave Cold at Winter Klondike Camporee

The Hampton Bays Boy Scout Troop 483 participated in the 2012 Boy Scout Winter Klondike Camporee last weekend.

Well, the Boy Scouts from Hampton Bays Boy Scout Troop 483 completed another Winter Klondike Camporee this past weekend.

What a difference a year makes as far as the weather goes for a winter camp out.  Last year we had to dig our way into the Campsite through 18" of snow and the temperatures were in the single digits, wind was calm.  This year ,we had no snow, but we had to contend with temperatures in the teens with winds gusting up over 30mph at times and wind chills near zero.

We set up base camp with the cooking area protected from the wind.  Plenty of hot food and hot drinks were prepared to keep the scouts warm.  We set the tents up with insulated floors to keep the scouts warm at night as well.  During the two-day event, the scouts from Hampton Bays competed in a Scouting Skills competition that tests their outdoor skills and knowledge.  The boys placed in the top four places in three of the twelve events with 30 troops competing overall.

On Saturday at Lunch time, the WEBELOS Cub Scouts from Hampton Bays Cub Scout Pack 483 came to visit and see what Boy Scouting was like.  We served them a nice hot lunch and hot drinks and showed them around the campsite. They seemed to really enjoy their visit with us.

Even though conditions were tough no one complained and everybody had a great time over the weekend.  Events like this help to build the boys' confidence and outdoor skills. It gives them a chance to experience the outdoors here on the East End like very few people ever get a chance to do. They did a great job and I am very proud of all of the scouts in Troop 483
