Remember What Your Mind Can Conceive, You Can Achieve

Many people don't realize that Michelangelo was only an infant when Donatello was first commissioned the undertaking...

I was thinking the other day about a time of change  enlightenment and rebirth
when human kind emerged from the dark ages and began to see things in new ways to look at things with new eyes and to imagine and consider infinite possibilities. Michelangelo once stated, “In every block of marble, I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

Many people don't realize that Michelangelo was only an infant when this sculpture Donatello was first commissioned the undertaking of what was initially intended to be one of 12 statues depicting characters from the Old Testament. Donatello only got as far as beginning to shape the legs and feet before he abandoned this project for unknown reasons. Artist and sculptor Antonio Rossellino was commissioned to continue the statue of David, though he would ultimately abandon the project as well. The block of marble used to sculpt the statue of David would sit abandoned in the cathedral workshop for 25 years before the Overseers began consulting with artists willing to finish the sculpture. Though the Overseers consulted many notable artists, including the great Leonardo da Vinci, it was 26-year-old Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, who received the commission on August 16, 1501.

It is also interesting to note that Michelangelo's depiction of David differs from many others from the same time period in that it does not depict David with his legendary foe, the giant Goliath. David's serene and contemplative pose have led some to suggest that the statue is David contemplating his upcoming battle with the giant, while others suggest that his pose is meant to convey David contemplating his victory the moment after the battle.

But either way, the depiction is a representation of strength of confidence of near perfection. And I'm wondering what part of you now is beginning to become aware that like David whether contemplating his battle or his victory over Goliath, identifying the point that you are in your ultimate victory over your obstacles. The results of which may take some time, but the decision to initiate the action happens now. Think of times in your past. When you are recognized or rewarded or praised for accomplishment and accomplishment that began in with the dream of thought. A desire a wish and exercising the discipline to commitment and effort to succeed and achieve and even surprise yourself of the hidden abilities, talents and strengths that you discovered for yourself and attaining that accomplishment. And the best accomplishments are the ones that we do for ourselves that you do for yourself. Because what your mind can conceive. You can achieve. You've proven this time and time again in this now is just yet another opportunity for you to prove to yourself. What a larger part of you has already accepted as a fact. And your attitudes beliefs and behaviors are all consistent with your desires, with your achievements and with your successes and with your continued success Michelangelo began his work one month after receiving the important commission. Michelangelo's completed sculpture of David was unveiled on September 8, 1504.

Imagine now seeing the self you are in the process of becoming now within a block of marble. As the sculptor said, "I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it. "
