Students Raise Enough Funds to Bring Back Cut Music Programs [VIDEO]

Pending school board approval both jazz bands will be brought back.

Westhampton Beach sophomore Luke Jurow and junior Riley Owens had a dream to bring back two jazz bands that were cut due to budget constraints.  Their dream came true on Friday night.

"It looks like they raised enough money," said Chris Herr, principal of Westhampton Beach High School.

The boys had an initial goal to raise at least $1,200 to bring back an advanced high school jazz band through the end of the school year, however managed to up the anti and bring in enough cash to also bring back the district's middle school jazz band.

The reinstatement of the programs does, however, depend on school board approval, Herr noted.

The boys say they hope that not only will the board approve the reinstatement of the bands through this year, but also will vote to continue the programs next year.

To raise the money, the boys organized a well-attended jazz concert that was held at the high school on Friday night. The concert, which featured ten musical performances by teachers and students, was free, however donations were accepted and a Chinese auction was held with items that were donated from area businesses.
