Southampton Incident Reports: Copper Thieves Strike

In this week's police files, multiple burglaries reported from Flanders to Bridgehampton.

 

Crimes and suspicious incidents from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 reported to Southampton Town police:

Burglary

• A Hampton Bays man reported on Feb. 3 that two flat-screen television had been stolen from his Red Creek Road home while he was away.

• A Water Mill resident reported on Feb. 3 that between Jan. 29 and that day a generator went missing from the garage at her Water Mill Towd Road home.

• A Rockville Center man reported Feb. 1 that someone entered his East Quogue home on Groveland Avenue through a rear door and stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics and a change jar.

• Sometime between Dec. 27 and Jan. 30 someone broke into a Point Road home in Flanders and stole copper water lines, according to an incident report. Police said the cousin of the homeowner said he found on Jan. 30 that the front door glass was broken.

Grand Larceny

• The caretaker for a Mid Ocean Road residence in Bridgehampton currently under renovation told police on Feb. 1 that he discovered the day before that an abstract copper statue, 80 feet of copper gutters, a Jacuzzi pump, heater and blower, and old copper air conditioning lines were stolen.

• A North Sea woman thought her $40,000 diamond ring on a platinum setting was safe in her closet for months, but when she checked on it recently she discovered it missing, according to police.

Assault

• A Hampton Bays teen reported that while at school another teen threw him into the wall, then onto the floor, on which he struck his head, causing his left temple to swell. He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment.

• A Flanders man reported on Feb. 3 from a hospital bed that he has a gap in memory between his acquaintance dropping him off at his sister’s house, and being in pain and bleeding with his cellphone missing. The man told police that his acquaintance, who he is on good terms with, had picked him up, then picked up a second man he never met before. When the victim’s sister came home, she took him to the hospital, police said.

Identity Theft

• A East Quogue woman reported to police on Feb. 2 that between Dec. 15 and Jan. 4 someone used her L.L. Bean Visa card to make $1,022.57 in fraudulent charges to backpage.com and Cablevision. The woman told police she learned of the fraud when the credit company informed her of an attempt to purchase $2,000 worth of groceries.

Criminal Mischief

• A Hampton Bays man reported on Feb. 4 that he found his mailbox at the home on The Trail was cracked in half. He told police that he found the mailbox and half the post 20 feet from its original location.
