Updated: Dune Road Residents Should Prepare for Evacuation

The Town of Southampton says an evacuation order may be issued within the next 24 hours.

PREVIOUS: As Hurricane Sandy continues to make its way up the coast, the Town of Southampton has issued a notice of anticipated evacuations for Dune Road.

The notice, which was issued late Saturday night, stated, "All residents and businesses along Dune Road should begin to prepare for an anticipated, mandatory evacuation within the next 24 hours."

With severe flooding expected to last through Wednesday, the town is also urging residents living in low-lying areas to begin to make preparations to leave their homes.

The red cross has already opened several shelters across Suffolk County, including a shelter at the Hampton Bays High School.

For residents with pets, Suffolk County, in conjunction with the SPCA, has opened two pet-friendly shelters, one at the Brentwood Rec Center, located at 99 Third Avenue in Brentwood, and the second at Suffolk County Community College's Eastern Campus, Woodlands Building, located at 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, in Riverside.

The Southampton Animal Shelter has said that it will accept animal in an emergency situation and urges residents to make other arrangements for their pets.
