Seal Found 'Lethargic' at Cupsogue

Riverhead Foundation is treating the seal, suffering an infection.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation rescued a seal pup off a Westhampton beach on Sunday and is treating it for an infection.

The female gray seal was "lethargic and unresponsive" when it was discovered by beach-goers at Cupsogue County Park, according to Kim Durham, the foundation's rescue program coordinator and a biologist.

The seal was also underweight at about 30 pounds.

Rescuers transported her to a tank at the foundation's headquarters in Riverhead. She has since "sassed up a bit," Durham said.

A veterinarian found some puncture marks on her body that were infected and she is receiving treatment.

The pup has company — another female gray seal pup that was rescued on Sunday from Montauk. The latter was found with fishing gear entangled around its neck. For pictures and video, visit East Hampton Patch.
