Hampton Bays Ambulance volunteers take cyclist who flipped over a Honda Accord to Southampton Hospital.

A bicyclist was struck by a car at the intersection of Route 24 and West Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the bicyclist cut in front of a black Honda Accord, which was heading west on Montauk Highway. They said the cyclist hit the windshield and then flipped over the car.

The cyclist was conscious and communicating with Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance personnel when he was transported to Southampton Hospital. The driver was shaken, but not injured.

Southampton Town Police Sgt. Herbert Johnson said the driver was headed westbound on West Montauk Highway while the cyclist was coming from Route 24. The cyclist was on the westbound shoulder when he tried to cut across West Montauk Highway and was struck, Johnson said.

The cyclist told ambulance personnel that he takes prescribed psychotropic medication, which may explain his behavior, Johnson said. The cyclist spoke Spanish, and only minimal English, and there were no Spanish-speaking emergency personnel on the scene, Johnson said, adding that the victim's identity will be discerned at the hospital.
