County, Town to Buy Bailey Motel Property

Land in Westhampton, known as the Bailey Motel property, will be preserved in perpetuity after the Suffolk County legislature, on Tuesday, voted to approve the purchase of the land through a 50/50 split with the Town of Southampton.

The move of $3.045 million in community preservation funds for its share of the purchase.

The 29-acre Bailey Motel property sits just east of Buoy One and adjacent to the surface waters of the Beaverdam Creek watershed. It is owned by 6 Pierrepont LLC and will be purchased for $6,090,000.

“This property, which is comprised of pristine meadow lands, woodlands, and wetlands, will provide important wildlife habitat and protection of the surface waters of Beaverdam Creek,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman in a statement to the media. “This Town and County partnership is another example of working together with the common goal of strengthening our efforts to protect open space and water quality.”

Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst agreed that the purchase is an important one: "This parcel has been at the top of the Town’s priority acquisition list for several years, and now it will be protected in perpetuity.”

In addition to the 29-acre purchase, three acres adjoining the Baily property is being bought by the Westhampton Cemetery Association and the Peconic Land Trust for a future cemetery, according to officials.
